Faces behind the Foundation: Rachael Farrell

As Philanthropy Coordinator for the Foundation, Rachael coordinates the delivery of philanthropic initiatives, collaborating with teams, community groups, and donors to create meaningful opportunities.

She also chairs the Foundation’s internal Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) group and looks after South Yorkshire’s Giving Network.

She recently conducted a piece of research called Vital Signs.

Before and whilst attending The University of Sheffield, I gained diverse work experience and volunteered in teaching sports to children, medical centres and charity projects. While also at The University of Sheffield, I served as a student ambassador and departmental representative for both the university and UCAS. After graduating, I succeeded in landing a role within a university graduate scheme. This opportunity allowed me to work at the Foundation in a position I was truly passionate about.

Hailing from Doncaster, my desire to join the Foundation stems from a commitment to give back to my community. Although it may sound cheesy, growing up I received support from various community groups, initiatives, and individuals during my formative years. My work experience and education have consistently focused on community support. I hold a bachelor's degree in Politics and International Relations and a Masters in Politics, Governance, and Public Policy from Sheffield writing research on topics such as "the practice of inclusion within education." Upon graduating from university, I was eager find a job that offered the "feel-good factor" but also continued to support communities in South Yorkshire.

Aside from my role as Philanthropy Coordinator and Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) internal group chair, I also look after South Yorkshire’s Giving Network, our Business networking group centred on supporting businesses and individuals achieve their social value and investment goals.

The most fulfilling part of my job is witnessing firsthand the positive influence that SYCF has on the community. Whether it's a new community garden bringing residents together, a youth programme providing invaluable skills, or support for local artists, the outcomes of our work are heartwarming and motivating. The strength within these communities is truly remarkable, and it's wonderful to experience it in person.

In 2024, I conducted a research project titled Vital Signs, sponsored by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority. To effectively respond to and support the needs of communities across South Yorkshire, we create and publish a comprehensive Vital Signs report every three years

The project was immensely rewarding, especially in giving back to the community groups that participated. Community-level research is invaluable and essential. To find out more about Vital Signs, please click here.

My favourite thing about South Yorkshire is the accent! Not only is it objectively the best in the UK, but the region is also a beautiful and vibrant place to live.  It is fantastic to have access to so many green spaces. I love how we have the ability to go into the Peak District, but also still experience what a city has to offer.

In my spare time, I primarily play field hockey, I play in defence and have broken my nose twice! The second break corrected the first one straightening my nose, so technically free plastic surgery! I also play various other sports and take part in multiple other activities such as paddle boarding, bouldering, hiking, running (but not very fast!) and cricket. When I am not playing sport, I am a big book worm. There’s nothing quite like diving into a good book, taking a break with a jigsaw puzzle, all while sipping on a herbal tea.
