Silence Breakers Media
Sheffield award winning social enterprise, Silence Breakers Media is doing its best to put a stop to digital exclusion.
Based in Kelham Island Quarter, Silence Breakers is run by founder and managing director Jay Baker, who alongside a small team keeps the enterprise on track, supporting disadvantaged people.
Recent grant funding from the Young People into Employment Fund has enabled the group to work with unemployed young people to provide them with work experience and IT training.
Our training is about giving people the skills and tools they need to run their own media activities, become more media literate and also to tackle digital exclusion. A lot of people are getting left behind as we become more and more digital. Some people aren’t really computer literate and we help them get online and more with the computers we have fixed up

The training and work experience was provided for 10 young people to equip them with key employability skills to enable them to have the confidence and knowledge to move into paid employment in IT. The training took place at the
Silence Breakers hub and included real work experience in sales, customer service, team work and communication skills as well as computer building and maintenance.
It has been great to work with these young people and help them to grow in confidence about themselves and about finding a job. We didn’t just want to provide this training programme and then shut the door. After the training is over we offer volunteering opportunities and when possible paid work on some of our community projects.
There is clearly a need for easier access to technology, so we are working to develop our centre to make it more accessible and supportive for everyone. We will continue to run these training sessions for young people and everyone else that can benefit for as long as are able. We know how much impact they can have on participants
