Crossroads Barnsley

Professor Chris Booth-Mayblin, chair of South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation (SYCF), accompanied by our philanthropy coordinator, Rachael Farrell, visited Crossroads Barnsley to meet some of the amazing people who make their amazing work possible.

Established in 1993, Crossroads Barnsley provides support services to carers and those they care for in Barnsley. Governed by passionate Trustees, it offers over 30 years of experience in giving carers a break with in-home support. The charity reaches nearly half a million carers annually, offering quality services regardless of age or condition, aiming to alleviate carers' stresses.

The charity supports spousal carers dealing with dementia and Alzheimer's by providing tablets for IT access, promoting connections, offering self-help forums, continuous assistance, home care, and support for households eligible for funded care from Barnsley Council. Crossroads also offers a variety of services to support carers, including respite care, home care, support groups, and dementia support.

In 2022, Crossroads received £15,000 from our Moving on Up programme to engage young people in care careers. This funding supported accredited care certificates, first aid, and safeguarding qualifications.

The Moving on Up programme provided grants of up to £15,000 over three years to South Yorkshire community organisations to help young people aged 14-30 find jobs. The programme focused on pre-employability skills and opportunities, especially for vulnerable and marginalised young people.

Chris and Rachael were invited as part of Crossroads Memory Hub event to an afternoon of entertainment, food and dancing at Barnsley Football Club. Crossroads holds weekly events to bring together those living with dementia, their carers, families and those facing social isolation.

Speaking with Susan Taylor, chair of trustees, multiple staff, and carers, it was clear how important carers are to our community and how a small amount of funding can make a big difference.

Chris said:

It was such a wonderful event and so inspirational. Crossroads is doing some amazing work, and I loved meeting everyone.  Everyone made us feel so welcome.

Susan Taylor, chair of trustees, Crossroads Barnsley, said:

It was fantastic to welcome SYCF to our Memory Hub event. We are incredibly grateful for the support they’ve provided through the Moving on Up programme.

Crossroads is committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care to carers and those they care for. We’re a vital resource for the Barnsley community, and the SYCF funding means we can continue our work across the borough as part of our mission to make a real difference to the lives of many people.
