Giving with SYCF: Julie and Neil MacDonald
Having established their Endowment Fund over a decade ago, Julie and Neil MacDonald wanted their funding to support children and young people who are disadvantaged, those with disabilities and/or learning difficulties
What inspired you to set up a fund with South Yorkshire's Community Foundation?
We wanted to give something back to the county that is our home. We had donated (and continue to donate) directly to some of the better-known local charities but were also keen to support smaller, grass-roots ones - and this is where SYCF excels. Since we set up our fund, we have been able to give grants to small charities and organisations across the county, all working to make a difference in their community.
How does it feel to hear about the stories from community groups who’ve used your funding to make a difference?
We will be honest, it does give us a 'warm glow' to know that we have been able to make a difference, even if it is only in one person's life. As someone famous once said 'You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.'
Do you have any advice for others who may be considering setting up a fund, or getting involved in philanthropy, with SYCF?
Ask to speak with someone who already has a fund. Don't hesitate, don't over-think it, just do it - you won't regret it!
