Snooker players get some pot luck after boost from UK Steel Enterprise

19th March 2009

SNOOKER players with learning difficulties and mental health problems have received a big break after a cash boost from UK Steel Enterprise's distribution fund with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation.

The Stephen Harrison Academy received funding to help those with learning difficulties build confidence and skills through the game of snooker, and is now reaping the benefits.

Stephen Harrison, founder of the Academy said: "UK Steel's investment has been brilliant for us.  I think it is a very good idea for businesses to think about giving to community groups and this grant could not have come at a better time.

"It is so difficult to acquire funding, and this backing was essential to us."

The Academy works to find new ways into employment for individuals with emotional and well-being issues or disabilities, and has developed the 'Snooker Futures' programme to develop job opportunities in the area.

"Through Snooker Futures we're looking to provide nationally accredited, inclusive learning programmes that lead to sustainable jobs and careers."

"We have taken social inclusion to a new level.  Everybody who comes in is really enjoying it, and learning through the game.

"We are providing chances for people that they wouldn't otherwise have."

Through the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, UK Steel Enterprise has made a grant of £1,500 to the Stephen Harrison Snooker Academy.

Allan Wood, regional executive of UK Steel Enterprise, said: "The work they are doing is fantastic.  They are engaging with other local communities and organisations, and providing a facility that is not currently there.

"It is important to us to forge links with the local community."

Through their association with the South Yorkshire Community Foundation, UK Steel Enterprise will be linked to many deserving causes in the area in need of assistance.

The charitably minded organisation also has its own Grassroots Endowment Fund with SYCF, through which any donations made are instantly matched pound for pound and then invested to provide a permanent capital fund to support the area in the future.

Allan said: "We got involved with the Foundation to take advantage of the match funding element of the Grassroots Grants endowment challenge, as well as to use the local contacts SYCF have with local community groups.

"The match funding is very helpful.  For businesses thinking about putting money back into local community groups it is ideal, it really allows them to gear up their funding."

The Stephen Harrison Academy is currently in the middle of a snooker tournament for people with learning disabilities that will culminate on Saturday, April 18 in the Academy's marquee on Fargate, the same day as the World Snooker Championships kick off at the Crucible

Also on the day, Clive Betts will be launching the 'Snooker Futures' programme, and talking about all the good work done by the Academy in the community.

Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF said: "The Stephen Harrison Academy is providing a very special service to those who access it, and the money they have received will really help them push on.

"We are delighted that the funding from UK Steel's Distribution Fund has gone to enhance the development of this group, that provides a friendly and supportive atmosphere where all people come together as one to enjoy a sport that they love.

"It is great to see people involved in local community projects who have a real passion for what they are providing.  Stephen is definitely one of those and he is putting the funding to fantastic use."
